On 8th February this year we welcomed the Chinese Year of the Monkey!

Apparently if you are born in the year of the monkey you are smart, amibitious and adventurous - all these traits definately apply to sock monkey mums.

They might also apply to a new little monkey who was born 11 days ago at Bristol zoo by C-section!

Okay she is technically a gorilla so depending on how pedantic you may not consider her a monkey, but it's close enough.

Here's some of the differences between apes and monkeys -

  1. Apes are usually larger and heavier than monkeys.

  2. Apes have no tail.

  3. Apes have a more upright body posture than monkeys, and are often able to walk on 2 legs.

  4. Apes have a broad chest.

  5. Apes rely on vision rather than smell, and thus have shorter noses than some monkeys.

  6. Apes have a large brain to body size ratio compared with other animals.

  7. Apes only live in Africa and Asia

The latest sock monkey mums are definately from Africa - there were made on Kilimanjaro!

They do have long tails, but also big brains and shiny eyes so they have something in common with their gorilla friends.
